In the world of filmmaking, every movie tells a unique story, brought to life by the talent and creativity of its creators. One such director and filmmaker is George Gerasymiuk, whose works deeply resonate with audiences and critics alike, prompting profound reflection on important issues.
George, how did your journey in the film industry begin?
— My journey into the film industry began with a deep passion for art. From a young age, I was captivated by the power of film to influence people and evoke emotions. When I realized I wanted to share my stories with the world, I started studying directing and screenwriting. It was a long and fascinating process that led me to create my own short films.
Your short films “Unborn” and “Through the Darkness” have received international acclaim. What do these works mean to you?
— These films hold a special place in my heart as they tackle profound social themes. “Unborn” addresses issues of birth and infertility, resonating with many people. This film was a significant milestone in my career, winning the Best Social Short Film award at the Miami Film Festival in December 2023, Best Short Film at the Europe Film Festival U.K. in 2022, as well as awards for Best Director and Best Sound Design at the Black Hat Film Festival in 2022. It was also an Official Selection at the Paradise Film Festival in 2022.
Meanwhile, “Through the Darkness” tells the story of Alexander, a young man who loses his sight but doesn’t give up, thanks largely to his family. This film emphasizes the strength of the human spirit and resilience in the face of adversity.
Tell us about your film creation process. How do you work on the script and direction?
— The process of creating films for me begins with an idea that then transforms into a script. I devote a lot of time and attention to detail to ensure every aspect of the story is well thought out and meaningful. After that, the shooting process begins, where I strive to create the best conditions for the actors and crew. Post-production is the stage where the film takes its final form. I personally oversee each step, including editing and sound design.
You own your own post-production company. How does this help in your work?
— Owning my post-production company gives me greater freedom in realizing my ideas. I can fully control the film creation process, from scriptwriting to final editing, ensuring the quality of the final product and bringing my creative visions to life without compromise.
What skills do you believe are key to success in filmmaking?
— Several key skills are crucial for success in filmmaking: directing, screenwriting, post-production, and organizing the shooting process. However, equally important are creative thinking and artistic vision. One must be able to see the bigger picture and understand how the various elements of a film will interact with each other. The ability to work in a team and manage people also plays a significant role.
Your films are shot in Ukraine, and you are in demand at home. Why the move to America?
— Yes, I now live in Miami. The USA is the best country for the development of the film industry. I feel that only here can I fully realize my creative potential.
What are your plans for the future? Are there any new projects you can share with us?
— Currently, I am finishing work on a new short film, which I am confident will resonate with both audiences and critics. I am always in search of new ideas and strive to create films that address important social issues and evoke emotions. My goal is to continue developing as a director and filmmaker and to create works that will remain in people’s memories for a long time.
Thank you, George, for the fascinating conversation. We wish you continued success in your future projects!
